Why buy directly from cooperatives
Morocco has thousands of agricultural and artisanal cooperatives producing argan oil, saffron, honey, rose water, spices and crafts. Buying directly shortens the supply chain: better traceability for you, and a fairer share of the price for the producers, many of them women's cooperatives in rural areas.
The challenge is finding reliable partners with the capacity, documents and export experience your order needs. This checklist walks through the process.
1. Shortlist verified producers
Start with producers you can verify: a registered entity, a named contact, clear product information and certificates you can check. On OrigineMaroc, every partner is reviewed before activation and certificates are checked before publication, so the partner directory is a good starting point.
- Compare region, product range, annual capacity and export experience.
- Read their certifications and check they cover the products you want.
- Contact two or three producers rather than one, to compare offers.
2. Send a clear request for quotation
A precise request gets precise answers. Include:
- Product and specification (for example cosmetic argan oil, cold-pressed, organic).
- Quantity per order and expected yearly volume.
- Packaging: bulk, private label or retail-ready.
- Destination country and preferred Incoterm.
- Documents you need: certificates, certificate of analysis, certificate of origin.
- Target delivery date.
3. Test with samples
Always validate quality with a sample before a large order, and keep part of it as a reference to compare against the production batch. For food products, consider an independent lab test on the sample.
4. Agree minimums, price and Incoterms
Cooperatives often have minimum order quantities linked to batch sizes and harvest seasons. Clarify what the price includes using an Incoterm:
- EXW: you collect from the producer and handle everything after.
- FOB: the seller delivers the goods loaded on the vessel at a Moroccan port (often Casablanca or Agadir).
- CIF: the seller also pays freight and insurance to your port.
- DAP: the seller delivers to your named place; you handle import duties.
5. Payment, lead times and shipping
Agree payment terms in writing; a deposit with the balance before shipment is common for first orders. Ask for a production lead time and factor in harvest seasons: saffron is harvested in autumn, and argan oil and honey availability also varies through the year.
Confirm who prepares the export documents, and check the import rules of your country (food registration, labelling, cosmetics regulations) before the goods leave Morocco.

Frequently asked questions
What is a typical minimum order from a Moroccan cooperative?
It varies by product and producer. Many cooperatives accept small trial orders, while private-label or bulk orders have higher minimums. Always ask during the quotation.
Which Incoterm should I choose for a first order?
If you do not have a freight forwarder in Morocco, FOB or CIF are common starting points. If you prefer the seller to handle transport to your door, ask for DAP.
How do I check a cooperative is legitimate?
Ask for its registration details and certificates, verify that certificates are valid and match the product, request references or samples, and prefer partners whose documents have been reviewed by a platform like OrigineMaroc.
